Powerlifters Finish Strong in Competition
Congratulations to the Iron Tiger Powerlifting team which finished 3rd in the JV 2010 Kentucky High School State Push-Pull Championship and 6th in the varsity competition. The JV Iron Tigers were led by Daniel Hoskinson (fourth place); Dylan Vish (second place); Michael Tedder (second place); Michael Simon (third place); Jack Allison (fourth place); Jacob Hoerter (seventh place); Jamie Thomas (seventh place); Kyle Abell (tenth place); Matt Harkonen (ninth place); and Andrew Packer (eleventh place). The Varsity team was led by Jake Kamber (third place); Jacob Shelton (fourth place); Sean Grady (fifth place); Andrew DeSalvo (fourth place); and Marcus Kelly (sixth place).
Lacrosse Team Earns Preseason #10 Ranking
Inside Lacrosse magazine released their third annual Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Regional Pre-Seasin Rankings, featuring the Top 10 teams within Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Southeast and West. The Saint Xavier lacrosse team was ranked #10 in the Midwest.
Justin Thomas Among Top Junior Golfers
According to the Polo Golf Rankings, junior Justin Thomas is ranked 12th nationally among top junior players after ten tournament finishes. He previously held the #10 spot for four weeks. The Polo Golf Rankings is a select ranking system that is used to rank the top junior players in the country.
This past Fall, Justin was named Kentucky's Mr. Golf after a stellar year of play. He also made history this past summer by becoming the third youngest player to make the cut at a PGA Tour event. Additionally, the American Junior Golf Association named Justin a second-team All-American. All of these honors are in addition to his individual and team KHSAA golf titles won earlier in October.
Football Team Wins State
Nearly 10,000 spectators were in Bowling Green, KY on Saturday, December 5th to watch the Tigers (14-1) defeat Trinity 34-10 for the 6-A state championship. It was the football program's 12th title overall and their first since 2004. Senior running back Michael Montano led all rushers with 67 yards. Touchdowns were scored by Montano, Jermiah Neal (2), and Jeonta Hayden. Quarterback Brian Buehner completed 4 of 9 passes for 50 yards with no interceptions. The Tiger defense forced three Trinity turnovers and limited them to 55 yards in the second half. This year's Tiger sports teams made history by sweeping all fall sports with 2009 KHSAA state championships in golf, soccer, cross country, and football.
Cross Country Team Wins State
The Saint Xavier cross country team claimed the KHSAA Class 3-A state championship on Saturday, November 14 at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. It was the program's 17th state crown. Coach Chuck Medley's team of 7 runners gave an outstanding performance finishing with 72 points. The next closest team was Daviess County with 149 points. All St. X runners finished in the top 34 of 221 competitors. Congratulations to these young men: Thomas Mann, Matt Hillenbrand, Conner Sheryak, Ian McCaslin, Austin Carter, Zach Beavin, and Will Ford.
Soccer Team Wins State
The St. X soccer team (23-1-1) became the first team in history to win 3 consecutive state championships after defeating Greenwood 4-1 Saturday night in Georgetown. Tiger goals were scored by Tyler Riggs (2), Cameron Coppola, and Mitchell Metzger. St. X players named to the All-Tournament Team were Cameron Coppola, Barrett Metzger, and Max McKiernan. Tyler Riggs was named the MVP.
Saint Xavier Golf Team Wins 18th State Championship!
The St. X Golf Team won their Kentucky-record 18th state championship on Wednesday defeating Lexington Christian by one stroke with at final score of 606. The Tigers were led by Justin Thomas, who shot a 2-under 142, David Payne with a 153, Robert Bader with a 158, Patrick Sullivan with a 159, and Ryan Glass with a 160. The Tigers overcame rough weather Tuesday and 27 holes on Wednesday to claim the crown. Congratulations goes out to the entire St. X Golf Team on this wonderful accomplishment.
Congratulations to Justin Thomas, Kentucky State Individual Golf Champion!
Justin birdied both holes in a sudden victory playoff to wint the title. On the first playoff hole, Hunter Stewart from Lexington Christian made a 60 foot putt for Birdie. Justin followed by making a 5 foot putt to tie. On the second hole Justin chipped in for the win! View the video of the exciting two-hole playoff!
Daniel Passafiume '07 Breaks NCAA All-Divisions Receptions Record
Hanover College sophomore wide receiver Daniel Passafiume '07 set an NCAA all-divisions record on November 14th with 25 receptions in Hanover's loss to Franklin College. His 25 receptions surpassed the mark of 24 set by NFL hall-of-fame receiver Jerry Rice and Chas Gessner, and earned him Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Rice had 24 catches for Mississippi Valley State University in 1983 and Gessner tallied 24 for Brown University in 2002. Daniel capped his 2009 campaign with 114 receptions for 1,054 yards and 14 touchdowns.
