In 2005, Saint Xavier High School set forth a $28 million strategic plan to transform the campus into the best Catholic High School in America. Five years later, St. X President Dr. Perry Sangalli, is set to announce that this capital campaign generated over $29 million in gifts and pledges from alumni, parents, grandparents, corporations and foundations, and friends of the school. A celebration dinner for donors will take place at the school on Saturday, February 6, in which the final total will be unveiled.
Project X was a comprehensive campaign designed to enhance every area of campus, from improving academic and sports facilities to attracting the best students and teachers. It was created with four initiatives: expanding the school’s annual fund, increasing endowment, improving academic facilities, and building athletic facilities.
Of the $28 million campaign, approximately half was devoted to need-based financial aid with the remaining dedicated to campus upgrades and construction. Over $1.6 million in financial aid has been awarded this year, keeping true to the school’s mission that all students, regardless of family income, be able to experience a St. X education. All 75 classrooms and teaching spaces on campus have been outfitted with SMART technology, allowing teachers to instruct with state-of-the-art equipment. Art studios were expanded, a new faculty work center was added, and the chapel was renovated. In the past five years, the endowment has grown from $8.6 million to over $13 million.
Construction on campus has taken form in three phases. The first phase of Project X brought the Saint Xavier community a new campus entrance, the Stock Yards Bank Student Plaza, and the Brown Tennis Center. In 2006, phase two was launched with a focus on athletic facilities. Student athletes and fans now enjoy the Brother Thomas More Page, C.F.X. Stadium, which hosts competitions for football, soccer, lacrosse, and track and field by accommodating up to 8,000 fans; the Gray Horton Fieldhouse, which houses locker rooms, hospitality suites, press box and coaches’ offices; the baseball stadium, which seats 500 spectators; and practice fields for soccer and lacrosse. The final phase of construction, which began in 2008, built the Brother John Wills, C.F.X. Sports Activities Center, which features a basketball arena with 2,000 seats, locker rooms, athletic offices, a ticket office, the school’s Campus Store, and concessions. These athletic facilities benefit not just the athletes, but all students through physical education classes and intramural programs.
