Tiger Athletics claim six state championships and three runner-up finishes in 2018-19 school year
The 2018-19 school year closes with six state championships. Titles have been won in lacrosse, rugby, soccer, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball. Tiger lacrosse, rugby, soccer, swimming & diving, and volleyball defended their titles from last year.
This marks the eighth time in school history Tiger Athletics have claimed six state championships in a school year, with the last time being in 2016-17.
Tiger Athletics vied for a state championship in 12 different sports, finishing runner-up in cross country, golf, and powerlifting. Additionally, St. X finished third in wrestling and tennis.
St. X also had five Tigers named individual champions: Will Cole (swimming - 200 Freestyle and 100 backstroke), Sungmin Kang (swimming- 200 individual medley), Holden Smith (swimming - 100 Butterfly), Nate Wheeler (wrestling - 145-pound weight class), and Beck O'Daniel (track and field - 300-meter hurdles).
Additionally, two St. X student-athletes claimed top honors in the Courier Journal Sports Awards. Senior Beck O'Daniel was named the Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year and senior Patrick Anderson was named the Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year.
"It is always rewarding to have the opportunity to watch our student athletes and coaches strive to achieve success on a daily basis. In reflection, it is easy to forget sometimes that high school athletics is supposed to be more about the journey than it is about the destination," said Athletic Director, Alan Donhoff. "That said, it is still very special when the journey ends with a championship. Congratulations to all of our teams and coaches for continuing the Tradition of Excellence that is Saint Xavier athletics."
