St. X becomes the first school from Kentucky to place in annual ranking
Saint Xavier High School is proud to announce the school finished 5th overall in the annual MaxPreps Cup for 2017-18.
This marks the first time a school from Kentucky has placed in the yearly ranking.
When it comes to overall athletic program excellence, you will not find a better example than what the Tigers achieved in the 2017-18 school year. According to MaxPreps' rankings, St. X finished as the nation's top boys sports program with 1,701 points. The margin of victory was 512 points ahead of the second place school.
The 2017-18 school year closed with nine state championships, tying the previous record set in the 2009-10 and 2015-16 seasons. Titles were won in baseball, cross country, lacrosse, powerlifting, rugby, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball.
Tiger Athletics vied for a state championship in 15 different sports, finishing runner-up in golf, football, wrestling and track & field.
Beginning in 2012, MaxPreps' annual ranking of the top high school athletic programs was revamped and renamed to MaxPreps Cup. The Cup, which recognizes the nation's top athletic programs around the country, is determined in July.
In order to determine the top programs in the country, MaxPreps has developed a ranking system. The system takes into account a school's success in 10 sports: football, basketball, baseball/softball, volleyball, wrestling, lacrosse, track and field, swimming, cross country and soccer.
School programs receive points for state titles, runner-up finishes based on the type of sport, the size of the state, the enrollment classification of the sport and the total number of teams competing in that classification. Points are also award for appearing in national rankings for various sports.
