St. X National Merit Semifinalists Announced

Seven St. X students named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Seven Saint Xavier seniors have completed the first step toward National Merit Scholar status and hope to join the more than 450 St. X alumni who have earned that distinction since the inception of the National Merit Scholarship Program 66 years ago. These students qualified based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

St. X congratulates the following seniors: Charles Brashear, Justin Burch, Hillis Burns, Carson Ching, Andrew Frey, William Moeller, and Harrison Stropkay. They will compete against approximately 16,000 other Semifinalists for spots as Finalists, which will be announced in February.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation was established in 1955. The goal of the National Merit Scholarship Program is to identify and honor the nation's scholastic champions and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence. Through this nationwide competition, National Merit Scholarships are awarded to program Finalists and Special Scholarships are awarded to other high performing participants who meet one of the corporate sponsor's eligibility criteria.

Mr. Jed Hilbert, St. X English Teacher and Test Prep Coordinator, shared his thoughts about the preparatory experience and resulting achievement of these students, "Within the St. X curriculum, students learned skills and practiced content in english, math, science, and history courses. This preparation included exercises ranging from reading different varieties of articles to practicing math formulas within their curriculum from the past six years. I also conducted a review class outside of school to further test familiarity and overall confidence in the subject areas. In addition, the consistency of the St. X class schedule allows for repetition each day in order to support the level of mastery needed to accomplish academic success year after year."
