Matt Yarborough named recipient at annual Feast Day Mass
At an all-school Mass today to celebrate the Feast of Saint Francis Xavier, Matt Yarborough received the Theodore James Ryken Award. Named after the founder of the Xaverian Brothers, the Ryken Award is given annually to a St. X faculty or staff member who dedicates his or her life to furthering the mission of a Xaverian education.
He teaches Advanced Placement and Honors Music courses and has been employed at St. X since 2006. Additionally, Matt is on the coaching staff for both Tiger Bass Fishing and Hockey teams. He is the moderator for the Tiger Pep Band, Tiger Chorus, and the Outdoor Adventure Club.
One colleague who nominated him said, "Matt constantly gives his time to the school. He reaches many students across many platforms. I cannot think of a person who deserves this award more than him. He is a man of great character and is a terrific role model for our students."
"I was so surprised and honored! There are so many fantastic teachers and students at St. X and I am so happy to be part of this community. I am blessed to get to work with so many different guys who have a wide variety of passions," said Yarborough. "It fills me up every day to get to engage with our guys and all of my close friends on the faculty. Special thanks to my family who are my emotional support through all of the busy and challenging moments of the school year. They have my back all the time and really are the unsung heroes behind all that we have been able to accomplish over the years."
Faculty and staff nominate colleagues for their commitment to proclaiming the Gospel, for participation in the school's community of faith, and for nurturing members of the community. Nominees also demonstrate commitment to academic excellence and model ways of recognizing the talents of individuals. They must be committed to educating the whole person and leading others to fulfill the Gospel call to peace and justice.
