Amy Sample will serve as the 23rd individual, only the fourth layperson, and first-ever female leader to serve in the school's 156-year history.
Amy Sample, currently Interim Principal for the 2020-2021 academic year, has accepted the position of Principal effective November 1. Sample is the 23rd individual, only the fourth layperson, and is the first-ever female leader to serve in the school’s 156-year history.
“It is a great privilege to name Principal Sample to her role permanently. After working side-by-side for the last six months, it became quite clear to me that the best candidate to become Saint Xavier’s next principal was already in the position,” said President Paul Colistra in making the announcement. “Amy has the experience, the skill-set, and the respect of our students, parents, and faculty/staff to serve as our next academic leader. In an all-male institution, it’s important for the development of our young men that they have strong witness of female leadership. Another added value Amy brings to her role as Principal is her perspective as a current parent, with two boys at St. X (Ian, Class of 2022 and Wesley, Class of 2024). Having a mother of two students in the Principal role certainly provides great perspective when we are making decisions that will impact students. Lastly, it’s important to state that with Amy accepting this role, we now have leadership stability at Saint Xavier High School. The leadership team of this school is stable, supported, and excited to begin the strategic work that will sustain and grow the standard of excellence that St. X demands.”
Amy was hired in 1999 as an English teacher for Mercy Academy. During her 19-year tenure with the school, she served as Assistant Principal for four years and as Principal from 2012-2018. St. X hired Amy in the summer of 2018 as part of the English faculty, and she most recently served as Assistant Principal for Studies for the 2019-2020 school year.
“I am deeply honored and excited to follow so many great leaders at St. X and to work with President Colistra. The legacy of the school is so deeply rooted in our community and beyond. Young men come to us as individuals who we envelop in our brotherhood for four years, and when they leave us, they are ready to write their own life story, a story that will inspire others and create great change in our world. I am so lucky to work with our teachers who excite and challenge our students each day as they prepare them for a world of uncertainties, so students walk across that stage at graduation as resilient men of character.”
Sample holds a bachelor’s degree from Bellarmine University, a master’s degree from Indiana University Southeast, and an educational specialist degree from the University of Louisville. Sample has two sons enrolled at St. X and they reside in the Fern Creek area of Louisville.
