Tigers sweep tennis titles en route to program's 28th championship overall
Congratulations to the Tiger Tennis team who swept the boys titles behind singles champion Eli Stephenson and doubles winners Ty Bush and Patrick Johnson. This marked the program’s 28th team title, which is a state record for tennis championships.
Sophomore Eli Stephenson bested Greenwood’s Jacks Lancaster 6-3, 6-3 in the singles final. Junior Ty Bush and senior Patrick Johnson beat South Oldham’s Jordan Cordrey and Matthew Thomas 6-4, 6-1 in the doubles final. The Tigers swept the boys titles for the 6th time in program history.
Other members of the championship team were junior Chris Kaufmann, sophomore Tommy Scanlon, and freshman William Lewis.
“After a 2020 canceled tennis season, the team returned to play this spring, and the score of 19 points marks the second-best performance since the KHSAA began awarding team titles,” said Head Coach Gil Downs. “These young men represented their 28 teammates and the entire Saint Xavier community both at this tourney and throughout the season in an exemplary fashion. They truly exhibited the principles of humility, trust, and zeal that are benchmarks of a student-athlete at St. X.”
This marks the school’s sixth state championship of the 2020-21 school year with titles in cross country, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and volleyball.
