Tigers sweep tennis titles en route to program's 29th championship overall
Congratulations to the Tiger Tennis team, who swept the boys' titles behind singles champion Eli Stephenson and doubles winners Ty Bush and Tommy Scanlan. This marked the program’s 29th team title, a state record for tennis championships.
Junior Eli Stephenson bested Henry Clay's Evan Duggal 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 in the final to claim his second consecutive singles title. In the championship match of St. X versus St. X, senior Ty Bush and junior Tommy Scanlan defeated seniors Conner Brewer and Chris Kaufmann 6-5, 5-7, 1-0 in the doubles final. The Tigers swept the boys' titles en route to claiming the team title for the 7th time in program history.
Ty Bush was named Mr. Tennis, the Tigers' first since Alex Wesbrooks was honored in 2018.
Sophomore William Lewis also competed in the singles draw and was named all-state by making it to the quarterfinals.
“The young men represented themselves and their school in an exemplary fashion, both with these victories and how they approach the game and how they handle themselves both on and off the court,” said Head Coach Gil Downs. "The team score of 20 points ties a record for the highest team score set by the 2016 Tigers and was one point better than the team score last year."
This marks the school's fifth team state championship in the 2021-22 school year with titles in Football, Lacrosse, Powerlifting, and Swimming & Diving.
