Track & Field Team Captures Indoor State Championship

Tigers claim first indoor title since 2009

The Tiger Track and Field team hasn't competed together since June 2019, but the team appeared to have not missed a beat capturing the AAA Indoor State Championship this past weekend at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.

Every Tiger participant performed well, dominating the competition with 114 points. The total was 61 points more than second-place Marshall County.  The team scored in 13 of 14 events—winning six of them.

Nolan Hester (pictured) broke 4 minutes in the 1500 meter run, clocking in at 3:58.27. The time set a St. X record and established the nation's number one time. Anthony Woods won the 60M, long jump, and triple jump.  The 4x800M relay team of Trae Burns, Liam Rice, Nick Brooks, and Sami Hattab won its event.  Blake Whiteley captured first place in the 800M.

Second place finishers were Ryan Burchett in the 3000M, Evan Brockman in the shot put, and the 4x40M relay team of Jack Marsh, Nate Jarboe, Trae Burns, and Sean Beam.  Sean Beam also took 3rd place in the 400M.

Other scorers included Kaleb Jones in the 60M, Matthew Wantland in the 1500M, Jack Marsh in the 400M, James Ricketts in the 200M and pole vault, Josh Striegel in the 300M, Nate Jarboe in the high jump, Andrew Buckler in the shot put, and Donovan McDade in the long jump and triple jump.

"I cannot begin to describe how excited and proud of our young men I am," said Head Coach David Stewart '06.  "I was excited to see what talent had developed throughout the state over the last two years and how our talent stacked up against it. Our young men performed extremely well, and the coaches could feel and see a sense of joy in competing. The high-caliber performances rolled one after the other and it became evident that they were feeding off each other.  I was proud of the way our young men competed, but I was more proud of the way they competed as a team.  The bench would clear every time one of our guys stepped on the track.  They invested in each other and used a teammate's victory as motivation for their own performance. As temperatures warm, practices intensify, and the outdoor track and field season begins, I look forward to witnessing how this group of young men can build on this victory and what they can accomplish together."

The varsity squad will be back on the track for a Pre-Spring Break Invite on March 25 at Saint Xavier High School.
