Summer Reading

Summer reading is mandatory for all students returning to St. Xavier next year. Incoming freshmen will receive instructions in the mail. Students registered for AP English Language and AP English Literature will NOT sign up via this link; they will receive instructions from the AP teachers. All other rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors should follow this link to the page with a link to over 60 titles, summaries, and reviews; a link to the signupgenius site to choose a book that you will enjoy; and downloadable instructions for the assignment. If you have questions, email Mrs. Metcalfe.

Reading is one of the best ways to learn new vocabulary words while honing one's own writing skills. It makes a person smarter and is exercise for the brain. Summer reading, the assignment associated with the book, and the assessment will help our students become lifelong learners who will enjoy reading. These activities will also allow the students to maintain the skills and study habits that they obtained during the previous school year and make it easier to “get back into the swing of things” when they return in the fall. We try to choose books and assignments that will be appropriate for the different reading and interest levels of our students. We realize that summer is a time for leisure activities, and our honest desire is for reading to become a part of our students’ lives.
