Principal's eNews Our first week went very well. We are pleased with how students are following the protocols we have in place. For clarity purposes, students utilizing full-time online learning have been approved by the administration for specific reasons. Full-time on-line classes are also available for students who are in quarantine. Students may be excused temporarily from in-person learning only with prior approval from the administration. Please make sure your son understands that his location of learning is not optional depending on his mood that morning.
This weekend there is nothing I would rather do than join friends and family for a cook-out and watch the Derby. We all deserve this. However, if we learned anything from Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, there are huge upticks in COVID cases following holiday weekends because people let their guards down and think they earned a break from worrying about COVID. Please do your part to keep COVID out of our school building by keeping this in mind as you make plans for this weekend. Tardies and Absences
Our week of "tardy grace" has come to a close. A student will now be counted tardy (or absent) if he logs in late to a class.
Communication will be key as we navigate this hybrid schedule. Students and parents might consider creating a distribution list that includes all of this semester's teachers, Ms. Wainscott, and his guidance counselor. September Key Dates

Visit The Daily Bulletin for school announcements and Athletics for team schedules. All students, faculty, and staff, are now required to complete the daily health screening on the Safety App every school day. This is mandatory whether logging in from home or coming to campus
The pre-screening form is available each weekday at 5:00 a.m. School Pictures
Freshmen parents can now view the Freshmen Picture Gallery and order school pictures online.
Sophomores and Juniors will have their pictures taken during their on campus days on September 1 and 2. All students participating in picture day should wear a dress shirt, tie, and sport coat to school. Standardized Testing Here are a few clarifications to help explain the climate of standardized testing right now and how that is translated here at St X.
Many colleges and universities are going test optional. Test optional can take on several different meanings at each school. It is very important that students visit college and university websites to stay informed of each school's policies and how that will relate to admissions and scholarships. After reading updates at the schools a student will be applying to, he should then determine if he needs an ACT and/or SAT. Register for these exams as soon as possible as space is limited.
Most standardized testing sites are encouraging juniors to hold off on taking these exams to allow seniors the opportunity to complete the testing they need. This will not be a problem for most students; however, some special leadership programs, such as the Governor's Scholar Program, may require a standardized test score. We encourage juniors that need a test score for special program selection only to register as soon as possible as space is limited.
St. X provides a national ACT during the school day for students in the spring of their junior year. This is referred to as a district test. Only junior St. X students can take this test at St. X. Generally, all high school juniors across the nation are provided this opportunity at their individual high school.
SAT
The College Board is administering weekend SAT or SAT Subject Tests every month through the end of the calendar year. Students can visit the College Board to get a sense of what test center capacity looks like for nearby upcoming administrations. X in the News
Educators Say Stories Lead to Understanding - Learning culturally diverse stories and stories of marginalized people can promote understanding and acceptance, according to Dr. Tom Malewitz and Dr. Beatriz Pacheco, two of our teachers whose work on the subject is included in a new book. Saint Xavier Gave Me Room to Explore In eighth grade, I knew I wanted to play tennis for St. X. Beyond that, my high school goals were pretty amorphous. I had dozens of careers in mind during high school ranging anywhere from being a marine biologist to being a US Senator. I never felt any angst about being unsure of my future in large part because Brother Eddie would always tell St. X parents to be patient because "your son is becoming." This message helped to make me comfortable enough to cultivate my talents and gain an understanding of how to apply them to causes greater than myself. At St. X, I was fortunate enough to encounter many unique opportunities to which I said yes and few to which I said no. For instance, I did not know that literary magazines existed when my 9th grade English teacher asked me to submit a piece of homework to Excelsior, but I said, "Yes." In 8th grade, I could never have predicted that as part of St. X's Spanish Club that I would be helping to develop games that encouraged students to think on their feet in a second language. Similarly unexpected, was being able to test Beargrass Creek's water quality with the St. X Environmental Club. Whether it was KUNA, Xavier News, or the Speech and Debate Team, I said yes to invitations from inventive teachers and made friends with interesting classmates.
The space St. X gave me to find my interests and the support from the resulting friendships helped me to develop courage for pursuing what life holds. Being willing to take part in endeavors such as Excelsior helped set the stage to me saying yes to more unknowns in college ranging from volunteering on capitol hill to using my Spanish skills to find a facility breeding endangered crocodiles in Costa Rica that was a bit off of the beaten path from where I was studying.
As life has progressed, I try to continue to build upon this foundation that St. X helped me to establish. From quirky things such as running my own tennis website and being able to ask questions of grand slam champions and Olympic medalists to embarking on the great adventure of parenthood and many points in between, St. X played a pivotal role in me becoming comfortable with the unknown character of the future we encounter at each moment. My advice to St. X's students today is that they stretch themselves in this environment because St. X students have a community that both supports and pushes them while they continue to become.
