Iron Tigers Win State Push-Pull Championship

Congratulations to the Iron Tiger Powerlifting team, which won the Kentucky High School State Push-Pull Championship. This marks the program’s first state title since 2018 and its 22nd overall.

Tom Ryan celebrates after breaking the school deadlift record.

The team placed 13 lifters in the top 5 and were led by individual state champions James Roth, Michael Wheeler, Tom Ryan, and two-time state champion Mark Federico. Additionally, Tom Ryan broke a St. X deadlift record.

Placing second in their respective weight classes were Harry Maupin and Brandon Dries. Third place finishes were earned by Xavier Mattingly-Neal, Marshall Sheridan, Erick Le, and Gary Russell.

The JV team placed 5th overall and was led by individual state champion Landon Babcock. Additional top-5 finishers include Patrick Jones (3rd), Ian Murphy (4th), and McKinley Alphin (5th).

“The coaches are very proud of all the lifters who competed at the state meet,” said head coach Chris Gold. “It was a total team effort with everyone playing a part as the varsity team pushed and pulled their way to a one-point victory over Madisonville. It is a championship to be shared by all the Iron Tigers who have come before, as well as the current Iron Tigers.”

This title marks St. X’s third team state championship in the 2021-22 school year with wins in Football and Swimming & Diving.
