St. X Announces Sports Broadcasting Program

Saint Xavier High School is proud to announce it has partnered with The Big X Sports Radio for the 2022-2023 school year. The broadcasting schedule will feature 24 games, including football, basketball, and baseball. The Big X can be heard on 96.1 FM and 1450 AM.

Familiar voices will headline the radio broadcasts throughout the year. Class of 1981 members John Spears and Tony Birk will team up to provide the play-by-play for the Tigers.

“I am thrilled to be entering my 26th year as part of the St. X radio broadcast team and 19th as play-by-play announcer,” said Spears. “I can’t wait to see this football team defend the program’s state title.”

Kroger will be the presenting sponsor for the year, and live play-by-play will be aired from the Kroger Broadcast Booth.

The radio partnership comes as a part of a new sports broadcasting initiative at St. X that will allow students to be heavily involved in each production.

“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said Athletic Director Denny Williams. “The partnership we now have with The Big X and Kroger will make all home games accessible for free to those who cannot attend in person. I am glad our students will have the chance to be hands-on and learn all they need to know about every aspect of production with each broadcast.”

“I'm really excited by the opportunities that the Becherer Production Studio renovations have allowed, including this new live sports broadcasting endeavor,” said Broadcasting teacher Brian Mitchell ’89. “We are embarking on a journey that will allow our students to gain real-world professional knowledge and experience with both TV and radio broadcasting, which also gives them the chance to have their work seen by a global audience and prepare them for future broadcasting and production careers.”

Additional radio patrons include three Green & Gold sponsors, Steepleton, M&M Cartage, and Culver’s of Louisville, and six Tiger sponsors, Tony Coyler Law, Knights Travel, DFH Heating & Cooling, Shady Rays, Tony’s Brake and Alignment, and The Eye Care Institute.

The 2022 football season begins on Friday, August 19, as the Tigers host Owensboro. The kickoff is at 7:30 PM.
