Trey Sweeney Drafted by New York Yankees

On Sunday evening, Trey Sweeney, Class of 2018, joined elite company as he was selected with the 20th pick overall in the first round of the 2021 Major League Draft by the New York Yankees. 

The former Tiger was one of nine players in attendance in Denver for the MLB Draft and All-Star weekend activities. 

He is the third Tiger to be drafted in the first round. Matt Anderson ’94 is the Tigers highest draft selection after being taken 1st overall in the 1997 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers. Chris Burke ’98 was selected in the first round in the 2001 MLB Draft with the 10th overall pick by the Houston Astros.

Sweeney, a redshirt sophomore at Eastern Illinois, hit .328 with ten doubles, 14 home runs, 58 RBI, and 52 runs scored during the 2021 season. He was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year while becoming a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Award. Additionally, he started 48 games at shortstop for the Panthers and was named a 2021 First-Team All-American.

During his time at St. X, Sweeney hit .389 with 41 RBI and 18 stolen bases during his senior campaign and helped lead the Tigers to a KHSAA state title.
