The Tigers Volleyball team earned the program's seventh straight state championship and 19th overall in the Kentuckiana Boys Volleyball Association Tournament at MidAmerica on Tuesday, May 11. St. X has captured 13 of the last 14 state tournament titles. The 2020 season was ultimately canceled after it started due to the pandemic.
The Tigers faced DeSales in the tournament semifinals, defeating the Colts 2-1 (25-20, 23-25, 15-11) in three sets. St. X swept rival Trinity 3-0 to capture the tournament title.
Tyler Laha led the Tigers registering 14 kills on a .519 hitting percentage. Clayton Roark added 11 kills on just 18 attempts with a .611 percentage. Charlie Murr had two blocks and 10 kills hitting .526. In the back row, Jacob Carrico led the Tigers with eight digs. Additionally, Gavin Peters anchored the offense with 33 assists.
"This KBVA championship was a team effort championed by our seniors. At the beginning of the school year, there were questions on if we would even have a season, but these guys rolled with it. They worked hard in the offseason to prepare and played together as a team. It is fitting that you play your best match of the year in the KBVA final. Charlie Murr got us going early by registering some early kills in the middle, which created great opportunities for Tyler, Clayton, and Carson on the pins. Gavin and Carrico were both great giving us consistent passing and setting, which set us up for success. I am thrilled for the seniors to see them go out with a championship and build on the legacy of St. X Volleyball," said Tiger Head Coach Ward Lotze.
Jacob Carrico, Tyler Laha, and Gavin Peters were named to the All-Tournament team.
This marks the school's fifth state championship of the 2020-21 school year with titles in cross country, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, and volleyball.
